Site fixes for better Internet Explorer compatibility
I ended up fixing the quirkiness with Carolen's suggestions and investigations into PNG issues. It seems Internet Explorer chokes if you don't specify a color under the CSS shorthand property "background":
background: url(IMAGEFILE) <color> <repeat> <position>;
After adding those in, and then tweaking the code a little bit so that the masthead was in a more manageable div area, my front page's backgrounds display quite well in Internet Explorer 6. I'm hoping Internet Explorer 7 will be easier to work with.
And, to make sure it was not my improper use of bad XHTML or CSS mark-up, I added links at the bottom of each page to the W3C validation services. This also demonstrates how hip and elite I am for following web standards! l33t!
Colin, who is now my co-worker in crime at the Academic Centers, has pointed out some big site design errors I hadn't thought about previously! I'll have to work on this some more this weekend when I get the time. Thanks Colin!
1. On the front page, I think you need some more contrast between the text and the background of the column titles ('Thoughtstream' and 'From the Portfolio'. Actually, the same goes for the word 'Search' above the search box since it's barely visible for me.
2. Something much smaller, your two publications about Maya are pretty long. It might be better to break them up into separate pages or to have links to each section at the top for quick navigation (in case you dont want to read it all at once).
3. Similar to 1, in each of your portfolio galleries I think the text under each picture should have more contrast with the background (and possibly a bit larger).
Some more that I thought of:
- My weblog needs a "by-title" index, a more manageable "by-month" index, "recent entries" blocks, and a categories block.
- Definitely need to add content to the Programming section
- Add more things to About to make it more personal.
And some good news... I'm getting an OCR interview with Google next week! Awesome!
